What is Network-Centric Computing?

The thin-client architecture explained
Thin client computing is simply when you host all applications and data centrally on a server and access it using a simple graphics based terminal (referred to as a thin client). This is different from a client-server architecture where some of the data and applications reside on PCs spread throughout the organization. Because no applications or data are resident on the desktop, it is “thin” when compared with the traditional PC.

Thin clients are in fact the successor to the mainframe terminal. The difference is the user interface is as good as a PC. Hence they give all the benefits of a terminal but without the disadvantages of a PC.
What can be accessed with a thin client?
Currently there are a growing number of interfaces for applications; Windows, web and legacy green screen. The thin client can access all of these with ease straight out of the box.

Windows applications
If you want to give your users access to standard Windows applications, you can do this by running their PC desktop packages centrally on a "Windows Mainframe" server running operating systems such as Microsoft Windows 2000 or Citrix MetaFrame. This architecture is often referred to as server-based Windows applications or Terminal/Server and is currently the dominant way that thin clients are deployed.
Wyse Winterm terminals can be used to access server-based Windows applications and data.
Web based applications using HTML/XML or Java
Web based computing is where applications are deployed using a form of HTML (ie: HTML, XML or Dynamic HTML), Java or a mixture of both. Applications and data are hosted on central servers and are connected to the web. Web browsers can then be used to access the application and data. This form of server based computing is currently growing the fastest with more than 75% of corporate applications, such as ERP, available with browser interfaces.
Wyse Winterm terminals contain built in web browsers for easy access to web based applications.
Legacy green screen applications
This form of server based computing dates back to the very origin of computing. It refers to older mainframe, mini-computer or Unix applications running centrally accessed using ASCII text terminals.
Almost all Wyse Winterm terminals come with 15 built in legacy terminal emulations allowing
connection to just about any legacy system.
